Unlocking EEG of Alpaca with the Unicorn BCI Core-8

Brain research is no longer limited to humans or laboratory rodents. Advances in non-invasive neurotechnology now make it possible to explore the brain activity of a much wider range of animals. Among them, alpacas are emerging as fascinating candidates for veterinary and comparative neuroscience. Their calm temperament, unique physiology, and increasing role in veterinary studies make them ideal for real-world EEG testing.

Our recent work with Merlin the alpaca demonstrates just how far this technology has come. Equipped with the Unicorn BCI Core-8, mounted comfortably on a halter, and connected via gold cup electrodes, Merlin was able to move naturally while providing reliable EEG signals. Thanks to the OSCAR LIVE software extension, motion artifacts were automatically suppressed—resulting in clean, real-time EEG of alpacas even as he walked.

Why Study EEG of Alpacas?

While alpacas are less commonly studied than pigs or primates, they provide valuable insights for both veterinary care and comparative brain science. Recording their EEG offers opportunities in several areas:

  • Comparative Cognition: Alpacas help broaden our understanding of mammalian neural processing, from sensory responses to learning behaviors.
  • Veterinary Practice: EEG monitoring during anesthesia or medical treatments adds precision and safety for these animals.
  • Welfare Research: Brainwave recordings can indicate levels of stress, relaxation, or discomfort, supporting better animal management.
  • Neurological Models: Alpacas, like other large mammals, may serve as models for certain neurological conditions, opening translational research pathways.
  • Behavioral Studies: EEG allows researchers to observe how brain activity changes during natural activities such as grazing, walking, or interacting with humans.

Unlike MRI or invasive techniques, EEG is lightweight, affordable, and—most importantly—suitable for real-world conditions.

The Role of the Unicorn BCI Core-8

The Unicorn BCI Core-8 was designed with flexibility and mobility in mind. For animal EEG applications like Merlin’s, several features stand out:

  • High-Resolution Signals: 24-bit precision ensures clear recordings.
  • Completely Wireless: Bluetooth 5 connectivity and a 6+ hour battery allow uninterrupted data collection.
  • Adaptable Electrodes: Gold cup electrodes can be applied easily through fur, and hybrid options allow both wet and dry recordings.
  • Instant Processing: With OSCAR LIVE, artifacts from movement are filtered out immediately.
  • Ultra-Lightweight: At just 23 grams, the device can be worn comfortably without restricting the animal’s movement.

These qualities make the Unicorn BCI Core-8 not only an amplifier but a versatile research platform for veterinary and neuroscience projects.

A First Step with Merlin

Merlin’s EEG recordings show what’s possible when modern brain-computer interface technology is applied beyond the lab. Clean, real-time brain data—captured while the alpaca moved naturally—illustrates how far veterinary EEG has advanced.

With tools like the Unicorn BCI Core-8, researchers now have the freedom to explore the brain activity of alpacas and other animals in authentic environments. This paves the way for breakthroughs in veterinary care, welfare monitoring, and comparative neuroscience.

Merlin’s contribution marks just the beginning—proof that high-quality EEG doesn’t have to be confined to humans or controlled laboratory conditions. The future of animal neuroscience is already unfolding, one alpaca brainwave at a time.
